You grew up poor.
So you chased comfort.
Now you hoard it.
Call it ambition.
Call it legacy.
Call it economic evolution.
But don’t call it innocence
when the maid’s ten-year-old daughter
asks why your six-year-old son
has two beds,
and you say,
“He’s earned it.”
Her mother has earned
every rupee for the bed
she still cannot afford to buy.
That’s why
she gets paid
to sleep under.
